The 2024 Jeep® Wrangler 4xe is the perfect vehicle for those who want the most out of an off-road SUV while also commuting in a sustainable manner. What does the 4xe mean in the model’s title? It has to do with the powertrain.
Learn how it works and why it contributes to optimal performance right here.
What Is the 2024 Jeep® Wrangler 4xe?
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the model’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. It’s also a four-door vehicle, which is somewhat of a novelty considering the Jeep Wrangler has traditionally been available as a two-door SUV. When using both the engine and electric motor, the model can travel up to 49 MPGe combined, by EPA estimates.
What Does 4xe Mean?
“4xe” represents the model’s powertrain, which is similar to the powertrains in previous Jeep Wrangler iterations. That is, it transmits power to the transmission. As power travels through the transfer case, power is sent to the Dana axles in the front and rear.
Here’s where the Jeep Wrangler 4xe diverges from conventional powertrains: the PHEV version of the model consists of two electric motors, one paired to the engine and the other to the transmission. These motors utilize a belt-drive that constantly spins even when the vehicle is halted. The spinning generates electricity.
When you accelerate, the generated electricity comes into play to provide a torque boost to the engine. In this sense, the powertrain acts as a hydro station, responsible for both creating and expending electric power.
